Three Arrested Following Brutal Child Rape and Murder in West Bengal

The South 24 Parganas district police in West Bengal have apprehended three individuals, including the prime suspect, in connection with the abduction, rape, and murder of a 12-year-old girl. The gruesome incident in Baruipur has sparked widespread public outrage, violent demonstrations, and a heavy political backlash across the state. In response to the escalating crisis, local authorities have established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to oversee the inquiry.

The breakthrough came early on Monday morning when local law enforcement intercepted the principal accused, Ananda Sardar, as he attempted to flee the Baruipur area. His arrest follows the prior detention of two other suspects, named as Prabhas Mondal and Dibakar Sardar. According to senior police officials, it was the sustained interrogation of Mondal that yielded the critical intelligence enabling officers to pinpoint the whereabouts of both Ananda Sardar and Dibakar Sardar.

The tragedy began to unfold on Saturday afternoon in the Dhapdhapi locality of Baruipur, near Surjapur Hat. The young victim had left her residence to visit a friend nearby when she was reportedly intercepted and forcibly abducted by a group of local youths. When the child failed to return home after several hours, her anxious family filed a missing person’s report at the Baruipur police station. Although an initial search was launched, local officers failed to locate her before nightfall.

Horror gripped the neighbourhood on Sunday morning when the girl’s body was discovered stuffed inside a sack, floating in a pond close to her family home. As preliminary examinations pointed to sexual assault followed by homicide, grief quickly transformed into intense public fury. Hundreds of residents blocked arterial roads, placing the victim’s body on the tarmac, and disrupted vital railway lines to demand immediate justice and the capital punishment of those responsible.

With tensions threatening to spiral out of control, additional police units were deployed to the area. To restore order and deter further violence, the South 24 Parganas district police enforced Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure across Baruipur, Sonarpur, and Narendrapur. Despite administrative appeals for calm, widespread protests continued for hours, paralysing parts of the sub-division.

Amid the chaos on Sunday, collective anger turned fatal. An agitated mob cornered a man suspected of being involved in the crime and subjected him to a severe beating. The individual succumbed to his injuries before emergency services could intervene, prompting the police to launch a separate investigation into the incident of vigilantism.

To ensure a rigorous and swift probe, a six-member SIT has been assembled under the direct leadership of the Additional Superintendent of Police. Investigators are currently cross-referencing forensic evidence from the crime scene with statements extracted from the detainees to map out the exact sequence of events. Authorities have stated that any other accomplices discovered during the process will face the full force of the law.

The incident has also triggered heavy political traffic in the area. A delegation from the ruling Trinamool Congress, led by the former Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Biman Banerjee, and senior leader Dola Sen, visited the grieving family to offer condolences and demand exemplary punishment for the perpetrators. Concurrently, a rival delegation from the CPI(M), including Sujan Chakraborty and Shamik Lahiri, visited the site to comfort the family while urging the state administration to guarantee a completely transparent and uncompromised investigation.

The brutality of the case has shaken the collective conscience of West Bengal, reigniting fierce public debates over child safety, the efficiency of police responses to missing persons reports, and the broader institutional challenges regarding violence against women and children in the region.
