Police have recovered the bodies of three unidentified men from separate footpath areas in Shahbagh, a busy part of the capital city. The bodies were found on Sunday (12 July), after passers-by informed police about three individuals lying unconscious at different locations.
According to eyewitnesses, the bodies were recovered from footpaths near Anandabazar, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and the road in front of Dhaka University’s Amar Ekushey Hall. The incidents took place in separate areas within a relatively short period, drawing attention among pedestrians and local residents.
Police said they received information after people noticed three men lying motionless on the streets. Responding to the calls, officers reached the spots and took necessary steps to recover the bodies.
At around 11am, two of the men were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared them dead upon arrival. One of the deceased was estimated to be around 60 years old, while the other was approximately 55 years old.
Earlier in the morning, at around 9:30am, another body was recovered from an area beside Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Like the other two victims, his identity could not be confirmed immediately.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Camp, said the initial assessment suggested that the deaths may have occurred due to health-related complications. However, the exact causes of death would be determined after further examination and investigation.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman said none of the deceased had any identification documents or information that could reveal their identities. Police suspect that they may have been homeless people living in the area.
The bodies have been kept at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for legal procedures and identification. Police are now working to determine their identities by collecting information from nearby areas and making inquiries with local residents.
Authorities said further action would be taken after the identities of the deceased are established. If any unusual circumstances are found during the investigation, necessary legal measures will be taken.
The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of homeless and unidentified people living on city streets, many of whom face serious health risks due to harsh weather conditions, lack of medical care and difficult living circumstances. Police said they are continuing their efforts to clarify the circumstances surrounding the three deaths.
