Barisal Metropolitan Police have apprehended a suspected drug trafficker in possession of 800 yaba tablets during a targeted afternoon operation. Officers from the Kaunia Police Station executed the raid on Monday in the South Palashpur area of Barisal city, acting on a tip-off regarding the movement of illicit narcotics in the neighbourhood.
The arrested individual has been identified as 35-year-old Mohammad Rasel Howlader, the son of Badsha Howlader, a resident of the locality where the operation took place. Law enforcement personnel intercepted the suspect as he was allegedly attempting to distribute the contraband. A thorough physical search led to the recovery of the significant consignment of yaba, a highly addictive synthetic stimulant consisting of methamphetamine and caffeine, which remains a severe social concern across urban transport routes.
Sanjit Chandra Nath, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaunia Police Station, confirmed the details of the arrest and the subsequent seizure of the 800 tablets. He stated that formal legal proceedings against the detained suspect are currently underway under the Narcotics Control Act. Investigators are working to determine the origin of the seized narcotics, exploring potential links to larger regional distribution syndicates operating within the Barisal division.
The South Palashpur area, owing to its geographic location near water bodies and transit points, has frequently been monitored by local law enforcement for drug peddling. This latest arrest is part of a broader, ongoing crackdown by the Barisal Metropolitan Police aimed at curbing the spread of illicit substances, particularly yaba and cannabis, which are often smuggled into the country through border regions before filtering into major divisional cities. Local authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining a strict stance against narcotics trafficking, urging community members to provide timely information to help dismantle neighbourhood-level supply chains.
