Victims Identified in Separate Incidents
The first incident took place early in the morning in the Baro Aulia area under Sonaichhari ইউনিয়ন. A local resident, identified as মো. হারুন, 54, was fatally struck by an unidentified speeding vehicle while attempting to cross the road.
Family members said Harun had been heading towards a nearby market when the accident occurred. Witnesses reported that the vehicle hit him with considerable force before fleeing the scene immediately after the collision. Local residents rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he died on the way due to severe injuries.
Police said efforts were underway to identify the vehicle responsible for the hit-and-run incident.
In another tragic accident, a 15-year-old madrasa student named মো. হাসান was killed while crossing the road in the Chhoto Kumira area. Hasan was a ninth-grade student at Mirzabazar Dakhil Madrasa in neighbouring Mirsarai upazila.
According to highway police, around 20 to 25 students from the madrasa had travelled to the Kumira Akilpur sea beach area for an excursion. Shortly after getting down from their vehicle, Hasan attempted to cross the highway when he was struck by a fast-moving vehicle.
Locals and fellow students quickly rescued the injured teenager and tried to take him to hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries before reaching medical care.

Residents spotted the body lying near the tracks and informed authorities. Railway police later recovered the body and sent it to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

Concerns Over Highway Safety
The Dhaka–Chattogram highway, which passes through Sitakunda, is one of the country’s busiest transport routes and has long been associated with frequent road accidents involving pedestrians, commuters and students. Locals have repeatedly demanded stricter traffic enforcement, pedestrian crossings and improved monitoring of speeding vehicles in accident-prone zones.
Officials from Baro Aulia Highway Police Station confirmed that legal procedures relating to the incidents were underway. Investigations are continuing to determine the exact causes of the accidents and to identify the vehicles involved in the two highway deaths.
