Three members of the same family have died after being electrocuted in Chapainawabganj, in an accident that occurred on Tuesday morning in the Barghoria-Badurtala area of Sadar upazila.
The deceased have been identified as Hasina Begum, wife of Mohammad Bhikhu of Badurtala; her niece Asha Khatun; and Asha’s daughter, Mim.
The incident was confirmed by Ekramul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station.
According to the police, a metal ladder at the family home became electrically charged after being exposed to rainwater. Asha Khatun and her daughter Mim reportedly came into contact with the ladder while attempting to climb it and were electrocuted.
Hasina Begum then rushed to their aid. However, she too came into contact with the electrified ladder and suffered an electric shock. All three died at the scene, police said.
The incident highlights the serious risks posed by electrical faults during periods of rain, particularly when water comes into contact with exposed wiring, electrical connections or metal objects. A seemingly ordinary household item can become dangerous if it is inadvertently connected to a live electrical source.
After receiving information about the accident, police went to the scene and recovered the bodies of the three victims. The deaths have left the family and local community in mourning, with the loss of three relatives in a single incident adding to the tragedy.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the accident were being examined and that necessary legal procedures would be followed.
The officer-in-charge said the bodies had been recovered from the scene and that appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the law. Further details regarding the incident are expected to emerge as the authorities complete their investigation.
