Touhid Afridi Granted Bail in All Three Cases

Content creator Touhid Afridi has secured bail in all three cases filed against him, following a court order granting him bail in a fraud case lodged with Wari Police Station in Dhaka.

On Tuesday (21 July), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam granted bail to Afridi after hearing an application submitted on his behalf. His lawyer, Iqbal Mahmud Shovon, said the court’s decision in the Wari case means that Afridi has now obtained bail in all three cases against him.

According to his lawyer, Afridi had previously secured bail from the High Court in two other cases. With the latest bail order, there is no longer any legal impediment to his release, the lawyer said.

The latest case centres on allegations of online financial fraud. According to the complaint, an online fraud syndicate allegedly contacted the complainant on 13 January 2025 through WhatsApp and Telegram, offering the prospect of employment. The group subsequently encouraged the complainant to invest money in several stages.

The complaint alleges that the fraudsters initially returned a small amount of money to gain the victim’s confidence. Having established trust, they allegedly persuaded the person to provide increasingly larger sums. The victim was later promised that the money would be returned with profits, but the promised repayment did not take place.

According to the case documents, a total of Tk 235,000 was allegedly taken from the complainant. Syeda Ashfah Towaha Dyuti subsequently filed a case with Wari Police Station, naming unidentified individuals as accused.

Afridi was shown arrested in connection with the case on 15 June. His latest bail comes against the backdrop of earlier legal proceedings involving him.

He was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Barishal on the night of 24 August last year. Following his arrest, he was subsequently shown arrested in several cases linked to the anti-discrimination movement and was taken into remand as part of the investigations.

Afridi is known as a content creator and has a significant presence on social media. The legal proceedings involving him have attracted public attention, particularly because of the number of cases in which he was detained or shown arrested.

The latest court order does not amount to an acquittal or a finding on the merits of the allegations. Bail allows an accused person to remain out of custody while legal proceedings continue. The investigation and subsequent judicial process in the cases will proceed in accordance with the law.

With the bail granted in the Wari Police Station case, Afridi’s lawyer has confirmed that he has now obtained bail in all three cases filed against him.
