Three Passenger Groups to Receive Rail Discounts

The government has announced that three categories of passengers will be entitled to a 25 per cent fare discount on metro rail and long-distance train services. The beneficiaries include senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and students, who must present valid identification to avail of the discount.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday after a meeting with Prime Minister Tarek Rahman at the Secretariat, Sheikh Robiul Alam, Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, Shipping, and Railways, confirmed the initiative. “Since the upcoming Eid is only a few days away, we are trying to implement the discount before the holiday. The probability is slightly low, but it will be available before the Eid-ul-Adha. Ticket fares will reflect a 25 per cent reduction,” he said.

Addressing concerns about online ticketing, the Minister explained that the system would include an option for discounted tickets. “Senior citizens must show a valid ID proving they are over 65, students need to present their student ID, and persons with disabilities must show their official card to receive the discount,” he added.

On the development of rail services, Sheikh Robiul Alam said, “We are seeking comprehensive improvements across the railway network. Existing trains’ speed will be increased, and travel times reduced through the accelerated implementation of ongoing projects. We are also introducing passenger-friendly initiatives to enhance service quality.”

The Minister further stated that, to manage Eid travel demand, the authorities are aiming to deploy 85 to 86 locomotives, which will help absorb the surge in passengers and prevent any scheduling disruptions.

Regarding road and waterway transport during Eid, Sheikh Robiul Alam confirmed that the government has mobilised multiple agencies, including mobile teams, the naval police, highway police, and the armed forces, to ensure safe and orderly travel.

He emphasised that no vehicle operators—whether bus or launch owners—would be allowed to charge extra fares. “We have held discussions with owners’ associations, and they have committed to compliance. We will monitor the situation to ensure it is fully enforced,” the Minister added.

With these measures, passengers can expect a safer, more affordable, and reliable travel experience during the upcoming festive season, reflecting a government effort to combine efficiency with fairness across all transport services.
