Chattogram’s notorious figure in the criminal underworld, Sazzad Hossain, alias Chhoto Sazzad, will remain in custody following a directive from the Appellate Division suspending his bail in all pending High Court cases. Although he had previously secured bail from the High Court, the latest order effectively nullifies that temporary relief.
On Wednesday, 17 December, the Appellate Division issued the suspension, rendering his High Court bail inoperative. Court and Chattogram Metropolitan Police sources confirm that Sazzad is now back in detention, with his legal options currently constrained.
According to police and court records, Sazzad Hossain faces 19 criminal cases, including 10 charges of murder. His wife, Sharimon Tamanna, is similarly implicated in multiple cases, with 8 cases filed against her, several of them murder charges. In September, both Sazzad and Tamanna were granted bail in four murder cases by the High Court, but the official orders only reached the Chattogram courts later this week. Tamanna is presently held at Feni Prison.

Police indicate that Sazzad’s criminal network remains active despite his incarceration. Approximately 50 members are reportedly involved in murders, extortion, and other organised criminal activities. Leadership has been assumed in his absence by Mohammad Raihan, Mobarak Hossain Iman, Borhan Uddin Kader, and Nazim, who coordinate operations locally.
High-profile incidents linked to his network include the 5 November attack in Chattogram-8, where gunfire erupted during a BNP candidate’s campaign, resulting in injuries to five and the death of Sarwar Hossain Babla, a gangster with 15 pending cases. Preliminary police investigations suggest the shooting was related to territorial disputes, though the shooter remains unidentified.
Most recently, a shooting incident at Kulgaon, Bayezid Bostami Thana, involved 15–20 rounds fired outside former Chatra Dal leader Ahmad Reza’s home, allegedly over a dispute regarding extortion of 50,000 Taka. Locals claim associates of fugitive gangster Sazzad Ali, alias Boro Sazzad, were involved. Police assert that Chhoto Sazzad is a close associate of Boro Sazzad.
Law enforcement officials emphasise that Sazzad Hossain’s continued detention is crucial to curbing the activities of his network and restoring public safety in Chattogram, where fear of gang-related violence remains pervasive.
