In a shocking incident in Raipura, Narsingdi, a local businessman, Rafiqul Islam Sarkar, was shot dead by assailants on Sunday night, 8 February. The attack took place in the Gazipura area of Charmadhua village, leaving the community in shock.
Rafiqul Islam Sarkar, aged 50, was the son of Haji Mongol Mia. He is survived by his wife, Momtaz, who serves as an elected member of the local Union Parishad representing Ward No. 6.
According to the deceased’s brother, Mostakim, the attack stemmed from a minor dispute in the village involving Rafiqul and two individuals named Rifat and Noyon. “Rifat and Noyon had ongoing disagreements with Rafiqul over trivial matters. It appears they had been planning an attack,” Mostakim said.
On the evening of 8 February, around 9:30 pm, Rafiqul was returning home from the local market when the assailants ambushed him. He was reportedly shot multiple times from behind. Gravely injured, Rafiqul collapsed on the spot and was immediately taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, doctors pronounced him dead around 10:30 pm.
Raipura Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Probir Chandra Ghosh, confirmed that the killing appears to have been motivated by a family-related dispute. “Preliminary investigations suggest the incident was rooted in domestic disagreements. The body has been sent to the Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Legal action will follow based on the findings,” he stated.
The incident has sent ripples through the local community, with neighbours expressing shock over the sudden violence in an area generally considered peaceful. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and collecting witness statements as part of their investigation.
