In a shocking incident in Valuka Upazila, Mymensingh, a 36-year-old housewife was brutally murdered in her own home. Rahima Khatun was found dead with her throat slit on Friday night, 6 February, at approximately 10:30 PM in her residence at Gangatiapara village of Hobirbari Union.
Police have taken her 17-year-old daughter, Somaiya Akter, into custody for questioning. Sources indicate that the incident unfolded after the evening meal, when mother and daughter retired to separate rooms for the night. According to preliminary reports, Somaiya heard a noise coming from her mother’s room and upon investigation discovered that Rahima Khatun’s bed was soaked in blood. At the time of the attack, her husband, Billal Hossain, was away at Sidstore Market, where he runs a lamp and electrical goods business.
Local residents have revealed that Somaiya had been involved in a romantic relationship with a young man, which was not approved by her family. Tensions over this relationship reportedly led to repeated arguments between mother and daughter. A few days prior to the incident, her mobile phone had been confiscated by family members. These circumstances have led locals to speculate that a family dispute may have been the underlying cause of the tragic killing.
Valuka Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Jahidul Islam, stated: “At the time of the murder, the daughter was in an adjacent room. She is unable to fully explain the events, but there are aspects of her account that appear suspicious. She has been brought to the station for questioning. A CID team is currently investigating the case.”
