The city of Sirajganj has been plunged into a state of mourning following the savage assassination of Abdur Rahman, a 20-year-old student activist who served as a key member of the district’s Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The fatal assault took place on Sunday afternoon, 28th December, in the Bahirgola Road area, specifically at the prominent Chaurasta intersection. Rahman, the son of Rezaul Karim and a resident of the Sya-dhangara Khanpara locality, was a dedicated scholar in his first year of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) studies at Islamia Government College. Witnesses report that he was sitting within a CNG auto-rickshaw when he was suddenly ambushed by a group of armed individuals.
The brutality of the event was captured by nearby CCTV cameras, providing a chilling record of the victim’s final moments. The footage reveals several youths approaching the vehicle from multiple directions, brandishing traditional sharp weapons such as machetes and knives. Without hesitation, they launched a relentless attack, striking Rahman repeatedly before fleeing the scene as bystanders looked on in horror. Although local residents acted quickly to transport the unconscious student to Shaheed M. Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital, he succumbed to his extensive injuries before medical intervention could save his life.
Rahman’s family remains devastated by the sudden loss of a young man they described as studious and civic-minded. His uncle, Sohag, explained that Rahman had merely gone out for a private tutoring session earlier that afternoon. The family was later notified by hospital authorities that he had been brought in following a violent altercation. While the motive remains unclear to the family, his active involvement in the district committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has raised concerns regarding a potential political orchestration behind the killing.
