Tragedy on Dhaka-Mawa Expressway as Consecutive Accidents Leave One Dead

A fatal sequence of road crashes on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway at Srinagar upazila in Munshiganj has claimed the life of a motorcyclist and left a bus passenger injured. The double collision unfolded within a brief interval during the early hours of Tuesday on the Dhaka-bound lane at the Sholaghar Bhuichitra spot.

The deceased motorcyclist was identified as 40-year-old Md Aslam Hossain, a resident of the Shahbagh neighbourhood in Dhaka. The injured individual, 47-year-old Md Nazrul Islam, hails from Mirzaganj upazila in Patuakhali district.

According to Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, Deputy Assistant Director of the Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, the emergency call reached the Srinagar Fire Station at approximately 3:25 am on Tuesday. An unidentified vehicle travelling at speed struck Aslam’s motorcycle from behind. The impact killed the rider on the spot.

Chaos escalated minutes later as rubbernecking and rapid speeds collided. A Dhaka-bound passenger coach belonging to Liton Travels slowed down and applied its brakes upon approaching the initial crash site. Seeing the commotion ahead, the driver attempted to decelerate, but an oncoming bus operated by Abdullah Paribahan, travelling at high speed directly behind, failed to stop in time. The trailing bus rammed forcefully into the rear of Liton Travels, causing injuries to Nazrul Islam, who was sitting inside the lead vehicle.

Two specialized rescue teams from the Srinagar Fire Station rushed to the scene shortly after receiving the alert. Fire service personnel recovered the body of the motorcyclist and handed it over to the Hasara Highway Police. Meanwhile, the injured bus passenger received immediate first aid before being transported by fire service ambulance to the Srinagar Upazila Health Complex for further treatment.

Md Sohel Rana, Officer-in-Charge of Hasara Highway Police Station, confirmed that police oversaw the recovery operations through the night. The victim’s body was formally handed over to his family members on Tuesday morning following completion of the necessary legal formalities.
