Tragic Collision on Dhaka–Sylhet Highway Kills Two

Brahmanbaria’s Ashuganj Upazila was the scene of a devastating road accident on Wednesday evening, in which two young motorcyclists lost their lives following a head-on collision with a truck. The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 pm on the Sonarampur Bridge along the busy Dhaka–Sylhet Highway, a section of road frequently cited by locals as accident-prone.

According to eyewitnesses, the victims—Saimon Mia (21), son of Shahidul Islam of Lakshmipur village, Bhairab Upazila, Kishoreganj, and Abdur Rahman (23), son of Makrul Molla from the same area—were returning from Bhairab when their motorcycle collided head-on with an oncoming truck. The force of the impact completely destroyed the motorcycle, leaving both riders critically injured. They were immediately rushed to Ashuganj Upazila Health Complex by nearby residents, but doctors declared them dead on arrival.

Local witnesses described the pair as childhood friends who often rode together. Their tragic deaths have left the community in deep mourning.

Suraikh Khatihata Highway Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md. Jahangir Alam, confirmed the accident and stated, “The truck involved fled the scene immediately after the collision. The victims’ bodies have been handed over to their families. We are actively working to identify and apprehend the driver.”

The Ashuganj section of the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway has long been regarded as hazardous, particularly during evening hours, due to heavy traffic congestion and inadequate traffic management. Preliminary investigations indicate that reckless driving and general neglect of road safety measures were contributing factors in the accident.

Authorities have urged all road users to exercise heightened caution, especially on high-traffic bridges and accident-prone areas. Meanwhile, local administration has announced plans to launch a public awareness campaign on road safety in Ashuganj and surrounding regions. Legal action will be taken against the truck driver once identified.

The tragic loss of these two young lives underscores the urgent need for stricter traffic regulations, improved road infrastructure, and community vigilance to prevent similar accidents in the future.
