Tragic Death of Mother and Son in Bogura Train Accident

A heartbreaking incident occurred in Sonatala Upazila of Bogura district on Sunday morning, when a mother and her young son were fatally struck by a train. Preliminary reports from local police suggest that the deaths may have been a case of suicide, though investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances.

According to Sub-Inspector Shariful Islam of Sonatala Police Station, the tragedy took place at around 9:30 am in the Chhoyghoria area of Sonatala town. The victims have been identified as Roni Begum, aged 30, and her eight-year-old son, Arafat, both residents of Doyail village in Gobindganj Upazila.

Police sources and eyewitnesses reported that Roni Begum was walking towards Sonatala with her son when they were spotted standing on the railway tracks. A local resident attempted to move them to safety, but tragically, within minutes, the Padmarag train bound for Santahar–Lalmonirhat struck them. The resident who tried to intervene sustained injuries while assisting.

Sub-Inspector Islam said, “At this stage, we are considering the possibility that this may have been an intentional act by the mother and child. However, a thorough investigation is underway, and the exact cause of death will only be determined after a full forensic examination.”

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the mother and son had been acting unusually in the days preceding the incident, prompting concern among locals. Neighbours expressed their shock and grief, stating, “The entire community is devastated. It is extremely sad to lose both a mother and her child in such a tragic manner.”

This incident has highlighted concerns regarding public safety around railway tracks, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas, as well as the importance of addressing mental health issues. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals near railway lines.
