Grief and mounting public scrutiny have swept through the coastal village of Gabura in Shyamnagar, Satkhira, following the midnight burial of Morium Khatun, the second wife of Gazi Nazrul Islam, Member of Parliament for the Satkhira-4 constituency. Late on Monday night, 21st September, a quiet gloom descended upon the banks of the Kopotaksho River as an engine-driven trawler transported her remains across the water. Hundreds of local residents gathered at the riverbank to receive the casket, which was accompanied by her father, Masum Billah, alongside her mother, grandmothers, and immediate family members.
Morium was laid to rest at approximately 12:40 am on Tuesday in her ancestral family graveyard at Sardarpara. The interment followed a deeply emotional funeral prayer adjacent to the Gabura West Para Sardar Bari Jame Mosque. The Janaza was attended by grieving relatives, community members, and local administration representatives, including Shyamnagar Police Sub-Inspectors Aniruddha Roy and Badiuzzaman, as well as Gabura Union Parishad Ward 2 Member Golam Mostafa.
Having spent the majority of her life raised in Dhaka, Morium visited her village infrequently, making the suddenness of her death particularly jarring for the local population. Residents expressed heartfelt sorrow alongside growing apprehension regarding the circumstances of her demise. Local resident Aminur Rahman noted that the sudden passing of such a young woman could not be viewed as routine, urging authorities to conduct a thorough investigation. Other villagers echoed this sentiment, demanding a transparent judicial process free from external influence so that the grieving family might find closure.
The tragic sequence of events began on Sunday, when police recovered Morium’s body hanging inside a flat at the NAM Bhaban—a government housing facility designated for parliamentarians in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. Following the discovery, her father lodged a formal case alleging abetment to suicide. The lawsuit names three individuals: MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Islam, and Morium’s maternal uncle, Obaidur Rahman.
Police swiftly took MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and Maksuda Islam into custody, presenting them before a Dhaka court on Monday with a seven-day remand prayer. Upon hearing the prosecution, the magistrate granted a four-day remand for the lawmaker and a one-day remand for his first wife to facilitate further interrogation. Court filings indicate that the third accused, Obaidur Rahman, currently remains absconding. As detectives in the capital work to reconstruct the events leading up to the tragedy, the people of Shyamnagar await a transparent accounting of the truth.
