A tragic incident claimed the life of a young student in Satkania, Chattogram, as he was travelling with friends to the seaside. Khorshed Rabbi, aged 25, was fatally struck by a speeding truck early on Wednesday morning, 25 February, along the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Highway. Rabbi’s family hails from Nilampotti neighbourhood in Nalitabari town, Sherpur.
The accident occurred at approximately 8:00 AM, according to police and eyewitness accounts. Khorshed Rabbi, a fourth-year Honours student in the Department of Political Science at Anandamohan College, was the son of Fazlur Rahman, a local primary school teacher.
Eyewitnesses reported that Rabbi and four of his friends departed on Tuesday night in a microbus bound for Cox’s Bazar. In the early hours of Wednesday, the group had stopped by the roadside in Satkania to rest. Rabbi exited the vehicle intending to move from one side to the other. At that moment, a truck approaching from behind struck him, killing him instantly at the scene.
News of the accident quickly spread in Nalitabari, casting a shadow of grief over the community. Family members, classmates, and neighbours expressed deep sorrow. Local residents recalled Rabbi’s commitment to social causes; he was an active voluntary blood donor, often contributing to saving lives in the community.
Khorshed Rabbi’s elder brother, Ujjal, spoke of his devastation: “He was our beloved younger brother. He recently married and was blessed with a daughter. Last night he set off for Cox’s Bazar, and this morning we received the news of his death. It is an immense sorrow for our family. His body is currently at Satkania Police Station, and discussions regarding its handover are ongoing.”
Satkania Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Ashrafuzzaman, confirmed the death: “The fatality has been verified. However, the official report specifying the exact location of the incident is pending. Appropriate action will follow once the report is received.”
This tragic event highlights the ongoing need for caution on highways, particularly when resting near the roadside, and serves as a stark reminder of road safety for students and travellers alike.
