A devastating road accident in Moheshpur Upazila, Jhenaidah, has claimed the life of a mother, while her son remains critically injured in hospital. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, 18 March, at approximately 11:00 AM near a cold storage facility in the Khalishpur area, sending shockwaves through the local community.
The deceased has been identified as Fuljuri Khatun, aged 45, a resident of Nimtala village and the wife of Fakir Ahmed. Her son, Lobluur Hossain, sustained severe injuries and is currently undergoing advanced treatment at Jashore 250-Bed General Hospital.
According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, Fuljuri Khatun was travelling with her son in a van to consult a local doctor when the accident occurred. A fuel-laden truck, approaching at high speed from the opposite direction, lost control and collided violently with the van. The impact was so severe that Fuljuri Khatun died instantly at the scene. Her son was rescued by bystanders and initially admitted to Moheshpur Upazila Health Complex, but due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to Jashore for specialised care.
Residents have voiced concerns over the frequent reckless movement of heavy vehicles along this route. The combination of narrow roads and inadequate traffic control has long been identified as a significant hazard, increasing the risk of similar accidents.
The Officer-in-Charge of Moheshpur Police Station, Mehedi Hasan, confirmed that the truck involved in the collision has been seized. However, the driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. A manhunt is underway, and legal proceedings are in progress against the perpetrators.
