A harrowing fire at a residential high-rise in Dhaka’s Uttara Sector 11 has resulted in a profound tragedy, claiming the lives of a young couple and their three-year-old son. The victims, identified as Kazi Fazle Rabbi (37), his wife Afroza Begum Suborna (30), and their child Kazi Fayaz Rishan, perished following a sudden outbreak of fire on Friday morning.
Incident Timeline and Emergency Response
The fire originated on the second floor of a seven-storey building situated on Road 18, Sector 11, at approximately 8:00 am on Friday, 16 January 2026. Given the residential density of the area, the blaze sparked immediate alarm among neighbours.
Two specialised units from the Fire Service and Civil Defence arrived promptly to combat the inferno. While firefighters managed to bring the flames under control within 25 minutes, the intense heat and smoke inhalation proved fatal for the family trapped inside the apartment. By 10:00 am, the fire was fully extinguished, leaving behind a scene of absolute devastation.
A History Shadowed by Grief
The tragedy has deeply affected the local community, particularly as the family had only recently found happiness following a prior bereavement. Fazle Rabbi’s first wife, Tithi, had passed away unexpectedly two years ago. At the encouragement of his family, Rabbi eventually married Afroza Begum Suborna, who was a close friend of his late wife. Little Rishan was the light of their new life together.
Under normal circumstances, Rabbi would drop his son at his grandmother’s house in Uttara before commuting to work. However, as the incident occurred on a Friday—a weekend in Bangladesh—the entire family remained at home, leading to this catastrophic outcome.
Final Rites and Tributes
The victims’ parents, Kazi Khorshedul Alam and Ferdous Ara, were seen at the scene in a state of inconsolable grief. Ferdous Ara is a well-known academic figure in the region, having served as a senior teacher at the Nawab Fayzunnesa Government Girls’ High School before her recent transfer to Debidwar.
