A fish trader was brutally killed in Saltha Upazila, Faridpur, while a van driver was found tied up at the scene, police and locals reported. The incident occurred early on Friday morning, raising concerns about violent attacks in the area.
The deceased has been identified as Utpal Sarkar, 26, the son of Ajay Kumar Sarkar from Ronkail village in Kanai Pur Union, Faridpur Sadar Upazila. According to Inspector (Investigation) Maruf Hasan of Saltha Police Station, Utpal had left home at around 4:30 am to purchase fish from Muksudpur in Gopalganj, which he regularly sold in local markets.
His body was discovered around 7:30 am near Kalitala Bridge in Gaurdia village of Atghar Union by locals, who immediately alerted the authorities. Police arrived promptly, recorded the scene, and prepared a preliminary report.
At the scene, van driver Firoz Molla was found tied up near the bridge railings, with his eyes covered. Residents managed to free him and ensured his safety. Firoz told investigators that three to four people had carried out the attack.
Inspector Maruf confirmed that Utpal had sustained multiple stab wounds to his head and body. His body was sent to Faridpur Medical College morgue for postmortem examination. Police are investigating the motive behind the attack, considering both possible personal enmity and robbery as factors.
The incident has caused alarm in the local community, with residents urging authorities to step up security along market routes and for traders operating early morning rounds.
