Truck Accident in Kotiaadi Kills Farmer, Cattle

A tragic road accident in Kotiaadi upazila claimed the lives of a farmer and his cow on Monday morning, highlighting ongoing safety concerns on the region’s busy inter-district roads. The incident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. on 16 March near George Institute High School, in the Achmita area along the Bhairab–Kishoreganj regional highway.

The deceased has been identified as Imon Mia, 26, a resident of Charipara in Achmita Union and the son of Khalek Mia. Imon was a professional farmer who often grazed his cattle along the roadside.

According to local witnesses, an auto-rickshaw travelling from Kotiaadi towards Achmita market abruptly changed lanes upon encountering a raised section of the road, without signalling the manoeuvre. At that moment, a truck coming from the opposite direction lost control while attempting to avoid the auto-rickshaw. The out-of-control vehicle struck Imon Mia and his cow, killing them instantly at the scene.

Kotiaadi Highway Police In-Charge, Khorshed Alam, confirmed the incident, stating, “The collision resulted in the death of the farmer and his cow. The overturned truck is currently being recovered. Further legal procedures are underway.”

Local residents expressed deep concern over the hazardous conditions of the regional highway, which experiences heavy traffic including passenger and goods vehicles throughout the day. Many point to a combination of poor road maintenance, absence of proper warning signs, and reckless driving as contributing factors to such accidents.

Police have advised motorists to exercise caution, particularly near populated areas and market zones. They also announced plans to enhance roadside signage and increase traffic monitoring to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Imon Mia’s death has cast a shadow of grief across the Charipara community. Local authorities have pledged to provide appropriate assistance to the family while ensuring that investigations proceed swiftly. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by farmers and pedestrians who share these busy roads with high-speed traffic.

Authorities emphasised the urgent need for community awareness, adherence to traffic rules, and road safety measures, especially in areas where people often graze livestock alongside the roadside. With coordinated enforcement and public vigilance, officials hope to reduce the frequency of such fatal accidents.
