A 40-year-old transport entrepreneur was brutally murdered in the early hours of Sunday in the Sondabari area of Gabtali upazila, in Bogura. The victim, Saiful Islam, was found with his throat slit near his residence, in what police suspect may have been a premeditated attack. Assailants reportedly fled with cash from his pocket and a basic mobile handset following the killing.
Local residents alerted police on Sunday morning (15 February) after discovering the bloodied body lying in a grassy plot to the north of his home. Officers from Gabtali Model Police Station recovered the body and prepared an inquest report before sending it to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Saiful Islam, son of Jamal Uddin Jamu, was a well-known figure in the locality. According to community sources, he owned seven trucks and operated a modest but stable goods transportation business serving regional routes. Neighbours described him as courteous and soft-spoken, with no known history of personal disputes or criminal involvement.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the area, as residents struggle to comprehend the motive behind the killing. Speaking to journalists, Bogura’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Hossain Mohammad Raihan, confirmed that the precise cause remains under investigation. “We are examining all possible angles, including business-related rivalries or personal enmity,” he said, adding that no arrests had yet been made.
Family members reported that Mr Islam had left for home late on Saturday night after completing his work, as was his usual routine. However, when he failed to return by dawn, relatives grew anxious. His daughter, Sadia Akter, stated that the family made repeated attempts to contact him by telephone, but received no response.
Police officers, including Officer-in-Charge Anichur Rahman and Inspector (Investigation) Abu Musa Sarkar, attended the scene shortly after being notified. Forensic evidence has been collected, and investigators are reportedly reviewing nearby surveillance footage, where available. The bereaved family has been advised to lodge a formal complaint to initiate a full criminal case.
