Trump plans to send Starlink to Iran, will speak with Musk

Amid ongoing protests in Iran, former US President Donald Trump has expressed his intention to deploy Starlink internet services in the country to restore connectivity. He has stated that he plans to discuss the matter with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, highlighting Musk’s expertise in such initiatives.

Iran has faced near-total internet shutdowns since Thursday, 8 January, leaving citizens virtually cut off from the outside world. Speaking to journalists on Sunday, 11 January, Trump remarked, “If possible, we will try to get the internet back online.” He added, “Elon is extremely capable in these kinds of operations. I will call him right after speaking with you.”

The current unrest in Iran began on 28 December as protests over rising commodity prices. However, the demonstrations quickly escalated into widespread anti-government rallies. The Iranian authorities have accused the United States and Israel of instigating the unrest, while the protesters demand greater economic relief and political accountability.

The internet blackout, now in effect for several days, has made it difficult for independent observers to assess the full scale of the protests and the government’s response. Social media and messaging services are largely inaccessible, complicating efforts to report real-time events and limiting the ability of citizens to communicate safely.

Experts note that Starlink, a satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, could provide a viable workaround to national internet shutdowns. By connecting users via satellites orbiting the Earth, Starlink can bypass terrestrial network restrictions, offering an independent channel for communication.
