Trump Signals End to US Military Push Against Iran

On Friday, 20 March, US President Donald Trump indicated that the United States may scale back its military operations against Iran, signalling a potential de-escalation of the conflict that began on 28 February. The announcement coincides with a temporary lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil shipments, a move aimed at easing global energy shortages.

Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social: “We have come very close to achieving our objectives, and we are now considering winding down our major military efforts in the Middle East.” Observers see this as the strongest indication yet that Washington is seeking to draw down its involvement in the region.

Following the statement, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt confirmed that the President and the Pentagon had initially estimated the operation would take four to six weeks to complete.

Temporary Sanctions Relief on Iranian Oil

In response to rising oil prices and global supply concerns, the US Treasury Department announced a temporary easing of restrictions on Iranian crude. The measure permits the sale and transport of oil and other petroleum products loaded onto ships prior to 20 March, remaining in effect until 19 April.

Rising Regional Tensions

Despite the US move, the situation in the Middle East remains tense. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, recently called for “severe retaliation” against his nation’s adversaries. Following this, Iranian forces launched drone and missile attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and Israel. In retaliation, early on 21 March, the Israeli Defence Forces struck several locations in Tehran linked to Iranian military leadership.

In a separate interview on 20 March, Trump reiterated that changing the Iranian government or regime is no longer a US priority. This marks a clear departure from the joint US-Israel operations that had begun on 28 February, which aimed to destabilise Iran’s leadership.

Analysts suggest that Trump’s announcement, combined with the temporary sanction relief, reflects a strategic pivot to reduce conflict while safeguarding global energy markets. While military operations may scale back, regional tensions remain fragile, and further diplomatic or military developments are likely in the coming weeks.
