Police in the capital have arrested 12 members of an organised mobile phone theft and trafficking syndicate operating in the Jatrabari area, recovering 62 stolen handsets of various brands and models during the operation.
According to law enforcement officials, the group had long been involved in collecting stolen mobile phones from different parts of the country at low prices before transporting and selling them in Dhaka. The network allegedly operated in a coordinated manner, enabling stolen devices to change hands rapidly and making recovery extremely difficult for rightful owners.
The arrests were made on Tuesday evening at around 8:30 pm during a targeted operation conducted by a special team of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police in the Shonir Akhra Bridge slope area under Jatrabari Police Station. Acting on confidential intelligence, officers detained the suspects on suspicion and, following a search, recovered 62 mobile phones believed to have been stolen. Preliminary verification suggests the devices include a mix of well-known international and local brands.
Police sources stated that the syndicate did not operate in isolation. Instead, it maintained links with local intermediaries and small-scale traders who facilitated the swift resale and distribution of stolen devices. This arrangement allowed the stolen phones to circulate quickly within secondary markets, significantly reducing the chances of tracing them back to their original owners.
Authorities believe that additional individuals may be involved and are currently on the run. Investigations are ongoing to identify the full extent of the network, including its financial transactions, supply chains, and potential collaborators across different districts.
A case has been filed at Jatrabari Police Station against the arrested individuals. After preliminary interrogation, they were produced before the court as part of standard legal procedures. Law enforcement agencies have confirmed that further investigative steps are underway to dismantle the wider network and prevent similar criminal operations in the future.
Officials have also reiterated their warning to the public, urging citizens to avoid purchasing mobile phones offered at unusually low prices, as such devices may be stolen goods. They further emphasised that public vigilance is essential in disrupting the market for stolen electronics.
