Two Arrested with Weapons in Rupganj Raid

In a pre-election security operation aimed at maintaining law and order and curbing potential terrorist activities, the Bangladesh Army conducted a targeted sweep in the Bhulta and Golakandail areas of Rupganj Upazila. The operation, which commenced at 10:00 pm on Saturday, 1 February, continued until 4:00 am on Sunday. During the raid, two individuals were apprehended and a significant cache of weapons and ammunition was seized.

According to sources at the Purba Chal Army Camp, the operation was based on prior intelligence. Two prime suspects, including Md. Kawser, were detained on the spot. The authorities recovered the following items from the arrested individuals:

Following preliminary questioning, both detainees were handed over to Rupganj Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Sabzel Hossain stated, “We have received the individuals from the army. Investigation into the seized weapons and ammunition is ongoing in accordance with the law. All necessary measures are being taken to prevent any untoward incidents during the upcoming election period.”

The army clarified that the operation primarily aimed to ensure local security and uphold law and order. Residents of Bhulta and Golakandail have reported a noticeable rise in illegal arms possession and criminal activity in recent weeks. Experts have emphasised that proactive and vigilant measures such as these are crucial for establishing a safe and peaceful environment ahead of elections.
