Two Children Die Amid Measles Symptoms

Two children with symptoms consistent with measles have died within the past 24 hours at the measles isolation ward of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in Bangladesh, while a further 26 children have been admitted during the same period, hospital authorities have confirmed.

The deceased include 10-month-old Sadequl, son of Humayun Mia from Gauripur upazila, and nine-month-old Sohan from Phulpur upazila in Mymensingh district.

Sadequl was admitted to the measles isolation ward at approximately 10:30 am on Saturday. He died around 25 minutes after admission. Sohan was admitted earlier, on 22 March, and died at 10:50 pm on Saturday.

Hospital authorities stated that neither of the two children had laboratory confirmation through sample collection for measles at the time of reporting.

According to the hospital, between 8:00 am on Saturday and 8:00 am on Sunday, 26 additional children showing symptoms consistent with measles were admitted to the isolation ward. During the same 24-hour period, 28 children recovered and were discharged.

Since 17 March up to Sunday morning, a total of 397 children presenting with measles-like symptoms have been admitted to the facility. Of these, 312 children have been discharged following treatment, while 12 children have died. At present, 73 children remain under treatment in the isolation ward.

Mohammad Mainuddin Khan, Assistant Director (Administration) of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, confirmed the latest figures, stating that two children had died within the last 24 hours, while 26 new patients showing measles-like symptoms had been admitted during the same period.

The hospital continues to manage cases in its dedicated measles isolation ward, where children presenting with symptoms are being treated and monitored.
