Woman Dies After Jumping Before Train, Child Left Unharmed

A 25-year-old woman died after reportedly jumping in front of a moving train at Darshana Halt Railway Station in Chuadanga, leaving behind a child believed to be around four years old on the platform.

The incident took place at approximately 12.30am on Friday, 31 July, according to local residents and railway police.

Witnesses and local sources said a train was entering the station at the time of the incident. As the train approached the platform, the woman, identified initially as Nilufa, suddenly went down onto the railway track. She was struck by the train and sustained critical injuries.

People in the vicinity rushed to the scene and attempted to rescue her. With assistance from railway police, she was subsequently taken to a nearby local clinic for medical attention. However, after examining her, the attending doctor declared her dead.

The incident took an especially tragic turn because the woman had apparently been accompanied by a young child. The child, estimated to be around four years old, was left on the platform while the woman went onto the tracks. The child was not injured in the incident and remained safe.

Following the incident, railway police took the child into their care to ensure the youngster’s safety. Officers then began efforts to establish the identity of the deceased woman and contact her relatives.

Police said the woman was initially identified as Nilufa. A mobile phone found in her possession reportedly helped investigators establish contact with some of her relatives. However, officers have yet to conclusively verify her permanent address and full identity. The relevant information is being checked as part of the identification process.

Railway police have also informed the child’s relatives about the incident. Once the necessary legal procedures have been completed and the identity of both the woman and the child’s family relationship has been verified, arrangements will be made to hand the child over to the appropriate family members.

The incident caused considerable concern at Darshana Halt Station, where police began collecting information from witnesses and local residents. Investigators are also examining the circumstances surrounding the woman’s presence at the station, her relationship with the child and the events immediately preceding the incident.

At present, authorities have not confirmed why the woman took the extreme step. Police have not disclosed any definitive explanation, and no conclusion should be drawn until the investigation establishes the facts. The circumstances leading up to the incident remain under examination, and the authorities are expected to take necessary legal steps once the relevant details have been established.

The incident has also highlighted the need for greater caution around railway tracks and platforms, particularly when trains are arriving or departing. Passengers are routinely advised to remain behind designated safety areas and avoid approaching railway lines unnecessarily. Adults travelling with young children are also urged to keep them within close reach and at a safe distance from the tracks.

For now, the immediate priority remains ensuring the child’s safety while authorities work to confirm the deceased woman’s identity and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The reasons behind her actions, including why the child was left on the platform, are expected to become clearer only after the investigation is completed.
