Tragedy struck Sherpur upazila in Bogura on Sunday night when a motorcycle accident claimed the lives of two young men and left a third injured. The incident occurred around 8:30 pm at Phulbari Bazar in Garidaha Union, drawing a large crowd of shocked locals.
The deceased were identified as Mehedi Hasan (20), from the Rameshwarpur area of Garidaha Union, and Sahabul Hasan (20), from Gosai Para in Sherpur Municipality. The injured youth, Utsab Chakraborty (20), also resides in the same locality. All three friends had successfully passed the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination earlier this year.
Eyewitnesses reported that the trio was riding towards Rameshwarpur on a single motorcycle when Sahabul Hasan, the rider, lost control at Phulbari Bazar. The vehicle collided violently with the shutter of a roadside shop, causing severe injuries to all three.
Locals immediately rushed the victims to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura. According to Sub-Inspector Amirul Islam of Sherpur Police Station, Mehedi Hasan and Sahabul Hasan were critically injured and later succumbed to their injuries between 10:00 pm and 10:15 pm while undergoing treatment. Utsab Chakraborty received primary treatment and was discharged, stating that the accident occurred due to overspeeding.
Inspector (Investigation) Lal Mia of Chhilimpur Police Outpost under Bogura Sadar Police Station confirmed the timing of the deaths, while Inspector Zainul Abedin of Sherpur Police Station stated that the bodies would be handed over to their families after completing legal formalities.
Local residents described the accident as a devastating event, emphasising that the area is often frequented by young riders. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations, particularly at night, to prevent similar tragedies.
The community has expressed deep sorrow over the untimely deaths of the two youths, highlighting the emotional impact on their families and friends. Both victims were well-known in their neighbourhoods, and their loss has left a profound sense of grief in the locality.
