Two JU JCD Leaders Ousted for Tributes to Sheikh Mujib

Two student leaders from the Jahangirnagar University (JU) branch of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) have been removed from all organisational roles and stripped of their primary memberships over allegations of violating internal party discipline. The swift administrative action reportedly came after both members uploaded images of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to their personal Facebook accounts to mark the anniversary of his death on 15 August.

The dismissal was formally announced in an official press release signed on Saturday by Md Jahangir Alam, Office Secretary of the JCD Central Committee. The penalized student leaders were confirmed as Ehte Shimul Haq, an undergraduate from the 48th batch of the Department of International Relations, and Foyez Howlader, a student from the 51st batch of the Department of Government and Politics.

According to the central management directive, the decision to revoke their posts was executed following specific findings of disciplinary non-compliance. The sanctions received direct authorization from central JCD President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir.

Insiders from the university’s Chhatra Dal chapter clarified that sharing tributes to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman—the historical leader of the Bangladesh Awami League—is viewed as a direct conflict of interest with the founding tenets and political doctrine of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its student wing. Engaging in public remembrance for the opposing political figure during a sensitive national anniversary was interpreted as a major breach of conduct.

While campus sources attributed the expulsion to the social media posts, the central press release carefully avoided explicit reference to the digital tributes, framing the dismissal under the broader administrative classification of “specific breaches of organisational discipline.”

The disciplinary swiftness on 15 August has ignited significant debate among the student body and faculty on the Jahangirnagar University campus. The event underscores the strict oversight student political entities in Bangladesh exercise over their representatives’ public conduct, particularly regarding online activities and political allegiance.
