Tragedy struck Dhaka’s Malibagh-Mouchak Flyover early on Thursday morning, when a CNG auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including a university student. Another person sustained injuries in the accident, police confirmed.
Sub-Inspector Sushanta Kumar of Ramna Police Station stated that the collision occurred in the early hours of 1 January 2026, sending shockwaves across the local community. “Two people have died, and one has been injured. The deceased have been taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while the injured motorcyclist is receiving treatment at a nearby facility,” he added.
The victims have been identified as 21-year-old Yasin Arafat Ashik, a student at North South University and a resident of the Mugda area, and 70-year-old CNG driver Nayon Talukdar from Mogra village, Kalihati Upazila, Tangail. Talukdar had been living with his family in Dhaka’s Dhalpur area.
Family members recounted the harrowing events leading up to the accident. Yasin’s maternal uncle, Jahangir Alam, said, “Last night, Yasin went out for a ride on his motorcycle with a friend. Early this morning, we received the news of the accident and rushed to the hospital, only to find him dead.” Similarly, Talukdar’s son, Babul Talukdar, described the ordeal: “My father left home in the early morning to operate his CNG. Later, we received word from the hospital that he had been involved in a road accident. We arrived to find him deceased.”
Preliminary reports suggest that the collision was head-on, though authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances, including potential speeding or road conditions. Emergency responders swiftly transported the victims to hospital, but the injuries sustained proved fatal for Yasin and Mr Talukdar.
