A tragic road accident claimed the lives of two people on Saturday afternoon when a passenger bus collided with a tractor in Ghoraghat upazila of Dinajpur district. The fatal crash occurred at around 12:30 pm on 27 December in the Birahimpur Gucchagram area, sending shockwaves through the local community and once again highlighting concerns over road safety in the region.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, a Dhaka-bound bus operated by Molla Paribahan was travelling from Dinajpur when it became involved in a violent collision with a tractor on the busy stretch of road. The impact was so severe that the tractor was completely mangled, leaving little chance of survival for its driver.
The tractor driver, identified as Juhin (23), a resident of South Debipur village, died instantly at the scene. His identity was confirmed shortly after the accident. Another individual sustained critical injuries in the collision and was rushed by local residents to the Ghoraghat Upazila Health Complex. Despite emergency efforts, doctors declared the victim dead upon arrival. As of the latest update, the identity of this second deceased person has not yet been confirmed.
Local witnesses described the scene as chaotic and distressing. “The sound of the crash was terrifying,” said one resident. “When we reached the spot, the tractor was crushed, and people were screaming for help.” Residents quickly came forward to assist the injured and alert emergency services.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahidul Islam of Ghoraghat Police Station confirmed the incident, stating that two people had been killed in the crash. “One of the deceased has been identified as the tractor driver. We are currently trying to determine whether the other victim was a passenger on the bus or the bus driver’s assistant,” he said. Police are working to establish the victim’s identity through hospital records and witness statements.
The situation was further complicated when the driver of the Molla Paribahan bus reportedly fled the scene immediately after the accident, abandoning the vehicle. Police later seized both the bus and the tractor as part of their investigation. OC Shahidul Islam added that preparations were under way to take appropriate legal action once the preliminary investigation is complete.
The accident caused temporary disruption to traffic in the area and has renewed local calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, improved road conditions, and greater accountability for drivers of public transport vehicles.
