Authorities have apprehended two additional leaders of the Jamaat organisation following a violent incident at Palashbari Police Station in Gaibandha, where the Officer-in-Charge (OC) and seven other officers, including female personnel, were assaulted.
The arrests were made by the Detective Branch (DB) of the police on Saturday night, 4 April, during a special operation in the vicinity of Digholkandi Government Primary School, Kishorgari Union, Palashbari Upazila. The two individuals were subsequently produced before the court on Sunday afternoon, 5 April.
The detainees have been identified as:
- Palash Ahmed (35) – Baitul Mal Secretary, Palashbari Upazila Youth Jamaat
- Golzar Rahman (34) – Local Jamaat leader, Palashbari Upazila
Police have confirmed that Palash Ahmed and Golzar Rahman are listed as the first and fourth accused in the ongoing case.
The operation was conducted based on confidential intelligence and coordinated by a joint team from Palashbari Police Station and the District Detective Branch. Prior to these arrests, three other Jamaat leaders implicated in the case had already been detained and presented before the court, bringing the total number of arrests in connection with the incident to five.
According to OC Sarwar Alam of Palashbari Police Station, the suspects had been evading arrest since the filing of the case. “We successfully apprehended them during the operation on Saturday night, and they were handed over to the court the following afternoon,” he stated.
The confrontation began when a group of youths, led by Palash Ahmed, attempted to forcibly enter the police station on Wednesday night at around 9:30 p.m., demanding that the OC intervene in locking a shop in Kalibari Bazar, which is under municipal ownership. When the OC refused to comply, the group attacked police personnel, resulting in injuries to eight officers, including the OC and an SI.
Subsequently, Sub-Inspector Ruhul Amin filed a formal case against eight identified Jamaat leaders and several unidentified individuals.
