Urvil Patel Shines Again: Century in Just 31 Balls

Urvil Patel has once again demonstrated why he is considered one of India’s most dynamic limited-overs batsmen. In today’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match, Patel scored a blistering century in 31 balls, the second fastest by an Indian in T20 cricket.

This performance coincides with Patel’s first match as captain of Gujarat. The 27-year-old right-handed batsman led his side to victory over Services, remaining unbeaten on 119 from just 37 balls. He struck 10 sixes and 12 fours, ensuring Gujarat chased down the target of 183 with 45 balls to spare. His leadership and batting combined to produce a dominating display.

Patel’s record in domestic cricket is exceptional. He previously scored a 28-ball century in the same tournament, equalling the fastest by an Indian, and another 36-ball century. In List A cricket, his 41-ball century against Arunachal Pradesh in the 2023 Vijay Hazare Trophy is the third fastest in Indian List A history. Remarkably, he is the only Indian batsman to have scored three centuries in under 40 balls.

Despite his extraordinary domestic record, Patel was not picked in last year’s IPL auction. He was later drafted mid-season by Chennai Super Kings as a replacement for an injured player, scoring 68 runs in three matches. His retention for the upcoming season highlights the franchise’s confidence in his abilities.

With his rapid scoring, multiple centuries in record time, and leadership debut, Urvil Patel continues to emerge as a potentially game-changing force in India’s domestic and franchise cricket landscape. His career trajectory suggests he could become a benchmark for aggressive and intelligent batting in the shortest format.
