US Intelligence Shows Israel Planned to Use Palestinians as Human Shields in Gaza

New reports reveal that Israel may have planned to use ordinary Palestinians as human shields in Gaza, based on intelligence suggesting that Hamas’ tunnels contained substantial explosives. Israeli forces reportedly sent civilians into these tunnels to verify explosive presence before undertaking military action. Reuters reports that the United States was aware of this information in advance.

Two former US officials confirmed that this intelligence was presented at the White House during the final weeks of the Biden administration in late 2024. American intelligence agencies analysed the data, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

International humanitarian law explicitly forbids the use of civilians as human shields in conflict zones. While Israel has faced repeated allegations of similar practices in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, this is the first instance supported by US intelligence data.

It is not confirmed whether the individuals mentioned in the intelligence were detainees or regular civilians. Moreover, the White House has not clarified whether the intelligence was used to engage Israel in discussions about the alleged practices.

In response, the Israeli Defence Forces stated that using civilians as human shields or compelling participation in military operations is strictly prohibited. The military police’s Criminal Investigation Division is investigating potential incidents involving Palestinians in military operations.

Analysts warn that this revelation may heighten international pressure on Israel and draw increased attention from human rights organisations. The disclosure underscores broader concerns about civilian protection in conflict zones and raises questions about accountability in ongoing hostilities in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
