Although vegetable prices typically fall during the winter season, residents of Dhaka are facing an unusual spike in costs this year. In retail markets across the city, prices have risen by up to 20 BDT per kilogram over the past week, with many vegetables now selling at around 80 BDT per kg, and some even surpassing 100 BDT per kg.
Vendors explained that while winter vegetables are generally more abundant, the supply of certain varieties—such as point gourd, eggplant, and ridge gourd—has decreased. Unseasonal rainfall in production areas has damaged crops, reducing wholesale availability and pushing prices higher.
A survey conducted on Thursday in Joarsahara, Badda, and Mohakhali markets revealed the following prices:
| Vegetable | Current Price (BDT/kg) | Previous Price (BDT/kg) |
|---|---|---|
| Ridge Gourd | 80 | 60 |
| Point Gourd | 80 | 60 |
| Beans | 120 | 110 |
| Eggplant | 80–100 | Not specified |
| Bitter Gourd | 100 | Not specified |
| Ivy Gourd | 80–90 | Not specified |
| Long Bottle Gourd | 80–90 (per piece) | Not specified |
| Cauliflower | 50–70 | Not specified |
| Cabbage | 50–60 | Not specified |
| Pumpkin | 50–60 | Not specified |
| Green Chilli | 160–200 | Not specified |
| Pumpkin Stem | 100 | Not specified |
| Radish | 70–80 | Not specified |
| Papaya | 30 | Not specified |
| Taro Stem | 80 | Not specified |
Vendors attributed the rise to crop damage caused by rainfall, which reduced wholesale supply and forced them to purchase from markets at higher prices. Consumers noted that the usual seasonal trend of falling winter vegetable prices has been reversed this year.
Meanwhile, prices of eggs and onions have slightly decreased. Farm eggs now sell at 120–130 BDT per dozen, down by 10 BDT. Chicken prices remain stable, with broiler chickens at 160–170 BDT per kg and Sonali chickens at 270–300 BDT per kg. Onions are priced at 105–110 BDT per kg, while green onions sell for 70–90 BDT per kg.
Market analysts suggest that the unusual weather patterns and supply disruptions are the main drivers of this atypical price surge. Consumers are advised to monitor prices and plan purchases carefully during the ongoing season.
