A violent confrontation broke out on Saturday evening at the toll plaza of the Seventh China-Bangladesh Friendship Bridge spanning the Arial Khan River in Pakhira, Madaripur Sadar Upazila. According to local witnesses and police reports, the incident occurred around 7 pm when a group of young motorcyclists attempted to cross the bridge.
The toll collection staff reportedly requested payment from the riders, leading to a verbal dispute. The confrontation escalated when the youths, armed with makeshift weapons, allegedly attacked the toll contractor’s office. During the attack, office furniture was damaged, and three workers sustained injuries, prompting immediate concern among bystanders.
Police from Madaripur Sadar Thana were notified and arrived promptly, restoring order at the scene. The victims have not been able to identify the assailants, and investigations are ongoing to establish the identity of those responsible.
Madaripur Sadar Model Thana Officer-in-Charge, Md. Adil Hossain, stated that the situation is currently under control. He emphasised that legal measures will be pursued once the toll contractor files a formal written complaint.
Experts and local residents have expressed concern over the safety of toll employees, noting that disputes over payments can quickly turn violent. They recommend enhanced security arrangements, including more consistent police presence and surveillance at toll points, to protect both staff and commuters.
This incident underscores broader challenges in toll management, where high traffic and payment disputes can create tension. Authorities are reportedly reviewing safety protocols and considering steps to ensure such confrontations do not recur, with the aim of maintaining both operational efficiency and public safety.
