The Sequence of Events
According to the formal complaint lodged on Monday by Ujjwal Akand, President of the Faridpur Union Chhatra Dal, the violence began at approximately 4:00 pm on Sunday. His cousin, Shahin Mia, was returning home from Madarganj Hat in Peerganj via a battery-operated auto-rickshaw.
Upon reaching the Nayanpur Village Jame Mosque, a gang of 13 to 14 assailants, reportedly armed with sticks and sharp weapons, intercepted the vehicle. The group proceeded to vandalise the rickshaw and assault Shahin. When relatives rushed to the scene to intervene, they too were attacked, eventually seeking refuge inside Ujjwal Akand’s residence. The mob followed, reportedly ransacking the house and assaulting those inside.
Casualties and Medical Status
The clash resulted in nine injuries, three of whom required urgent hospitalisation at the Sadullapur Upazila Health Complex.

Political Friction or Business Dispute?
The motive behind the attack remains a point of significant contention. Ujjwal Akand and Parvez Sarkar, Member Secretary of the Upazila Chhatra Dal, allege that the assault was a targeted act of retribution by local Jamaat-Shibir activists. They claim the family was targeted for their vocal support of the “Sheaf of Paddy” (Dhanyaer Shish) symbol during the recent National Parliamentary Elections.
Conversely, the Secretary of Upazila Jamaat, Mr. Sirajul Islam, has categorially denied any political involvement. He maintains that the altercation was a secular dispute regarding the ownership of a commercial enterprise in a local market, rather than an ideological confrontation.
Official Response
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadullapur Police Station, Abdul Alim, confirmed that a formal complaint has been received and that the police are actively investigating the root cause of the violence. “We are currently determining whether this stemmed from political rivalry or a private dispute,” he stated, adding that legal proceedings are currently underway.
