Massive protests have erupted in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. On Sunday, 1 March, demonstrators gathered outside the United States Embassy in Karachi, leading to at least six deaths and numerous injuries, confirmed by the local Edhi Rescue Service.
According to Pakistani media outlet The Dawn, citing police and rescue officials, the deceased were transported to Karachi’s Civil Hospital (CHK). In a statement, Edhi Rescue confirmed, “Our ambulances swiftly delivered the deceased and injured individuals to CHK.” Several of the wounded are reported to be in critical condition.
Background and Escalation of the Protests
The demonstration escalated when protesters attempted to breach the embassy gates. Police responded with baton charges and tear gas, resulting in multiple injuries. At one point, parts of the embassy were set ablaze. Verified footage from Qatar-based Al Jazeera showed demonstrators breaking embassy windows and damaging the American flag.
Despite efforts by Pakistani security forces to regain control, clashes between police and protesters continue, raising concerns over further escalation.
Attack in Iran and Khamenei’s Death
The incident follows significant military strikes in Iran by the United States and Israel on Saturday, 28 February, which caused extensive destruction. Semi-official Iranian news agencies, Tasnim and Fars, confirmed that Ayatollah Khamenei was killed during these attacks. In response, the Iranian government has declared a seven-day national holiday and announced a 40-day period of official mourning.
Casualties Overview
The table below summarises the casualties and emergency response during the Karachi protests:

The protests in Karachi highlight growing regional tensions and reflect the broader international repercussions of Khamenei’s assassination. Security forces remain committed to controlling the unrest, yet the ongoing clashes are a source of grave concern for both local residents and international observers.
Analysts view the demonstrations as part of a wider political crisis in Iran and a direct reaction to US–Israeli military actions, intensifying instability across the Middle East. With both political and sectarian tensions mounting, the situation in Pakistan and the surrounding region remains volatile.
