Visa Extensions Granted for Stranded Bangladeshi Workers

Amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East, numerous Bangladeshi expatriates on leave have found themselves stranded, with many facing expired or soon-to-expire visas. In response, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment has issued an official public notice outlining measures to temporarily extend visa validity for affected workers.

Official Advisory on Visa Extensions

On Saturday, the ministry released the advisory, emphasising that due to the Iran–Israel conflict, expatriates currently in Bangladesh who cannot return to their host countries for visa renewal will be eligible for temporary extensions. The directive applies to workers whose visas have already expired or are approaching expiry, preventing them from travelling safely under current conditions.

The ministry confirmed that the extension process is coordinated with authorities in key Middle Eastern countries, ensuring legal compliance and uninterrupted employment for stranded workers.

Country-specific Guidelines

Workers are instructed to coordinate with their employers, sponsors, or kafils to apply for visa renewal or extension through official channels, either online or via employer submissions. Current updates from host countries are as follows:

Implications for Bangladeshi Workers

The initiative is expected to ease anxiety among stranded expatriates, allowing them to remain legally compliant while awaiting safe repatriation. Key considerations include:

  • Employer Coordination: Maintain communication with sponsors to ensure proper application.

  • Legal Compliance: Avoid fines or legal complications from overstayed visas.

  • Travel Planning: Prepare for safe return once the regional situation stabilises.

Ministry Statement

The Ministry stated:

“Given the extraordinary circumstances in the Middle East, these measures aim to safeguard the legal status of our citizens abroad. Workers are encouraged to follow official guidance and coordinate with their sponsors to benefit from temporary extensions.”

Broader Context

The advisory comes amid heightened tensions in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Oman, Bahrain, and Qatar, where the Iran–Israel conflict has disrupted normal travel and administrative operations. By facilitating visa extensions, Bangladesh and host governments aim to mitigate legal and logistical difficulties, ensuring continuity of employment and safeguarding the welfare of expatriate workers.

The move demonstrates proactive diplomatic and administrative coordination in response to regional instability, highlighting the government’s commitment to protecting its overseas workforce.
