Police in Kalapara, Patuakhali, have arrested three individuals, including a local volunteer leader, over allegations of extortion, assault, and looting targeting local fishermen. The arrests follow a series of complaints from residents who claim they were threatened and physically harmed to pay money for access to fishing areas.
The operation took place on Sunday, 1 March, in the Ukil Potti area of Kalapara town, where law enforcement detained Suman Fakir, the chief of the Nilganj Union Volunteer Group. His two associates, Sajib Fakir and Md. Rasel, were also apprehended. Police confirmed that the arrests were made following a formal complaint lodged by Chan Mia Gazi, a resident of Nilganj Union and long-time fisherman who relies on government canals and wetlands for his livelihood.
According to the complaint, Suman Fakir and his associates had been demanding extortion payments amounting to BDT 250,000 for fishing rights in the area. On the night of Saturday, 28 February, the accused reportedly arrived at Chan Mia’s residence armed, attempting to collect the demanded sum. When the fisherman refused, he was physically assaulted and thrown into the canal. During the attack, his daughter reportedly intervened to protect her father, resulting in her being assaulted and subjected to alleged sexual harassment.
Chan Mia stated that this was not the first time he had been targeted. Previously, he was forced to pay BDT 50,000 under threats from the same group. He added that he had sought legal protection after being unable to endure further physical abuse. The fisherman also alleged that members of the accused’s group attempted to obstruct him while he was on his way to the police station to file the complaint. He noted that local BNP leaders supported him during this period.
