Dhaka’s Metropolitan Magistrate court has approved a two-day remand for Kamrul Hasan Ripon, president of the Dhaka Metropolitan South unit of the Volunteer League (currently banned), in connection with a high-profile murder case registered at Jatrabari Police Station.
The order was issued on Thursday by Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam. Police had initially requested a seven-day remand to interrogate Kamrul in relation to the killing that occurred during the July public uprising.
Speaking to the press, public prosecutor Anwar Hossain stated that Kamrul was produced before the court shortly after 1:00 pm. Lawyers representing the defence petitioned for the remand to be cancelled, but the prosecution presented arguments supporting the request. After a brief hearing, the magistrate granted two days’ remand, allowing investigators to continue questioning the accused.
Kamrul was arrested late on 19 January and handed over to Bhatara Police Station. The following day, he was produced before the court. The remand application was filed in relation to the Jatrabari Police case by Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Rasel Sardar, the case officer. The court had scheduled the remand hearing for 22 January while ordering Kamrul to be kept in custody until then.

The incident in question occurred on 5 August 2024, when a march organised by student activists was proceeding towards Shahbagh. As the procession entered the Jatrabari police jurisdiction, an unexpected attack occurred, during which Din Islam was shot and fatally injured.
