Wedding Clash in Madaripur Leaves Five Injured

A celebratory wedding in Madaripur turned violent on Friday when a dispute over the volume of music from a hired sound system escalated into a confrontation between two parties, leaving five people injured and causing property damage, including the destruction of a shop and two motorcycles.

According to police and local sources, the incident occurred in West Rajair, Ward 5 of Rajair Municipality, during the wedding of the daughter of local resident Shahid Sheikh. Both the bride’s and groom’s families had arranged a sound system to play music at the event. Following Friday prayers at a nearby mosque, Jahangir Khan (45), a former convener of the Rajair Upazila Chhatra Dal and ex-union council member, arrived at the venue, demanding that the music be lowered out of respect for religious observances.

A verbal altercation reportedly broke out inside the mosque between Jahangir and Oli Sheikh (40), the brother of the groom. The disagreement quickly escalated outside, spreading into the streets of Rajair Bazar and Beparipara from approximately 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Both sides engaged in a physical clash, wielding improvised weapons and bricks, resulting in chaotic scenes of chasing, counter-chasing, and vandalism.

During the conflict, Oli Sheikh’s associates reportedly vandalised Jahangir Khan’s fuelwood shop and two motorcycles. According to Shahid Sheikh, “Jahangir attempted to disrupt my daughter’s wedding with his group. He threatened my brother after prayers, and when we objected, he sent people to attack him.”

Jahangir Khan offered a differing account, stating, “My sole concern was the noise pollution and the excessively loud music. My shop and motorcycles were vandalised, and my people were injured. We demand a fair and proper investigation.”

Among the injured, BNP leader Badshah Mir (50) sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Four others were also treated for injuries at local medical facilities.

Sheikh Aminul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Rajair Police Station, confirmed that the situation, which had spread across two villages, is currently under control. Additional police personnel remain deployed to prevent further escalation, and both parties have been instructed to file formal complaints at the police station.
