A profound sense of grief has engulfed communities in southern Bangladesh following a devastating road accident in Rampal upazila of Bagerhat district that claimed the lives of 14 people, including a newly married couple and numerous members of the groom’s family. The tragedy occurred shortly after the wedding ceremony, cutting short the couple’s hopes for a new life together and leaving two families shattered.
Authorities confirmed that the bodies of the victims were handed over to their relatives on Thursday night from Khulna Medical College Hospital and Rampal Upazila Health Complex. In response to requests from grieving family members, officials permitted the bodies to be released without post-mortem examinations. By early Friday morning, most of the victims’ remains had reached their respective villages, where scenes of intense mourning unfolded.
Nine of those killed belonged to the groom’s family. Their bodies were transported to Shehalabunia village in Mongla upazila of Bagerhat, where hundreds of residents gathered in sorrow. Meanwhile, the bodies of the bride and three of her relatives were taken to Naksa village in Koyra upazila of Khulna district.
According to police and family sources, the bride, Marzia Akter (Mitu), daughter of Abdus Salam Morol from Naksa village in Amadi union of Koyra, married Ahadur Rahman (Sabbir), the youngest son of Abdur Razzak, a local political leader and ward president of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in Mongla Municipality. The wedding ceremony took place on Wednesday night.
The following day, at approximately 12:15 pm, the groom’s family began the journey back to Mongla with the bride. Fourteen relatives from both families travelled together in a microbus. When the vehicle reached the Belaibij area of Rampal upazila, near Mongla, it collided head-on with a bus belonging to the navy travelling from the opposite direction. The impact was severe, killing most passengers instantly. The microbus driver was also among the deceased, while one passenger survived but sustained critical injuries and is receiving treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital.
The groom, Ahadur Rahman, was known locally as the owner of a mobile phone shop in Mongla town. His bride, Marzia Akter, was a first-year Alim student at Naksa Alim Madrasa. Their marriage, celebrated only hours earlier, ended in tragedy before the couple could begin their new life.
Local residents described heartbreaking scenes in Shehalabunia village on Friday morning. Relatives wept beside the bodies, while neighbours gathered in large numbers to offer support. Four female victims’ bodies were placed inside the family home, while five others were kept temporarily at the Upazila Parishad grounds before the funeral.
Abdul Alim, father-in-law of the deceased Ummay Sumaiya, said he had attended the wedding and never imagined such a catastrophic outcome. Another relative, Sajjad Sardar, the younger brother of Abdur Razzak, explained that funeral arrangements required stretchers from nine nearby mosques because of the large number of victims.
The funerals are scheduled to take place after Friday prayers, with burial planned at Mongla municipal cemetery.
