Wedding Music Row Sparks Alleged Mosque Violence in Bangladesh

A dispute over music played during a wedding celebration in north-western Bangladesh has escalated into allegations of violence inside a mosque, prompting a police investigation in Chapainawabganj’s Gomostapur upazila.

The incident is said to have occurred in Makrampur village under Alinagar union at the Baitus Salam Jame Mosque shortly after Friday prayers. Police confirmed that they have received a written complaint alleging that tensions stemming from a wedding ceremony several days earlier culminated in an altercation on mosque premises.

Gomostapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Barik stated that the complaint was submitted on Saturday afternoon by Abul Kalam Azad, the father of the bride. He noted that while the matter is being formally examined, efforts at informal reconciliation through local community leaders are also under way.

Origin of the dispute

According to Abul Kalam Azad, the conflict began on 23 March during a wedding held at his father-in-law’s residence, which is situated near the mosque. Music was being played using a sound system as part of the celebrations.

He claimed that local community leader Shariful Islam intervened at the time, objecting to the use of loud speakers, which he said were discouraged under local social norms. Following the objection, the music was stopped and an apology was offered by the family, which they believed had resolved the issue.

However, Azad alleged that the matter resurfaced days later during Friday prayers, when tensions escalated once again. He claimed that after the congregation ended, individuals were incited and a group subsequently entered the mosque premises, where members of the wedding party were attacked.

Allegations of violence and intimidation

Abul Kalam Azad stated that he, along with several relatives including Muslim, Ahad, Sharif, Durul and Asgar, were physically assaulted during the incident. He further alleged that his father-in-law, Ashikul Islam, managed to flee the scene unharmed.

He added that the situation deteriorated further after the incident, forcing members of the family to leave their home due to fears for their safety.

Relatives of the complainant have also alleged ongoing intimidation. Tania Akter, a family member, claimed that threats were issued warning of further attacks, prompting several relatives to remain indoors or relocate temporarily for security reasons. The family has described the situation as one of continued fear and uncertainty.

Counter-claims from local leader

The allegations have been firmly denied by Shariful Islam, the local community leader named in the complaint. He rejected claims of any physical assault, insisting that no violence occurred.

He described the situation as a verbal disagreement linked to the use of loud music at the wedding ceremony. Shariful Islam further stated that the village has, over the past two years, maintained a socially agreed restriction on the use of sound systems during public or private celebrations, aimed at reducing noise-related disputes.

He maintained that the matter was limited to objections and discussions, and not an organised attack or confrontation.

Police position and ongoing inquiry

Officer-in-Charge Abdul Barik confirmed that the complaint alleges an assault inside the mosque following Friday prayers, linked to the earlier dispute over wedding music. He added that the case is currently under review.

He further noted that although a formal complaint has been lodged, the complainant has also indicated that local elders are attempting to resolve the matter through community mediation. According to police, this suggests that a decision on further legal action may depend on the outcome of ongoing reconciliation efforts.

Authorities have not yet confirmed any arrests, and no formal charges have been announced at this stage.

Rising concern in the locality

The incident has reportedly created tension within the village, with conflicting accounts from the two sides deepening uncertainty over the events that took place. While one side alleges a coordinated attack inside a place of worship following provocation, the other insists the dispute remained verbal and rooted in local cultural restrictions on loud music.

Local administration officials have said they are monitoring the situation closely to prevent further escalation. They emphasised that both legal procedures and community mediation mechanisms are being pursued in parallel to restore calm and resolve the dispute.
