A shocking case of familial betrayal and premeditated murder has come to light in Netrokona, where a 58-year-old farmer, Helal Uddin, was brutally killed by his own wife and four accomplices over a failed cattle theft plot.
According to police, Helal Uddin’s wife, Bedena Akhtar, 40, faced mounting pressure to repay several debts totalling BDT 100,000. In an attempt to settle her loans, she secretly conspired to sell her husband’s cows without his knowledge. When Helal discovered the plan and tried to prevent the theft, Bedena, along with four others, allegedly bound his hands and mouth before fatally slitting his throat.
The gruesome murder took place in Nadiapara village of Netrokona Sadar Upazila on Saturday night. Helal’s body was discovered the following Sunday morning in his own home by police, who found him in a bound and mutilated state.
Bedena Akhtar has since confessed to her involvement in the crime during interrogations at the Netrokona Model Police Station. Two of her alleged accomplices, Liton Mia, 50, and Riel Mia, 40, have also been arrested. Liton Mia reportedly has five previous cases related to cattle theft. Police continue to pursue other suspects involved in the incident.
Inspector (Investigation) Champak Dam of Netrokona Model Police confirmed that the rapid investigation led to the arrests of the main perpetrators, highlighting the effectiveness of their swift action. Police believe the motive was primarily financial, linked to Bedena’s debts and the desire to quickly liquidate the family’s livestock.
The victim’s younger brother, Riaz Uddin, filed a murder case against unknown individuals on Monday, which eventually led to the apprehension of Bedena Akhtar and the two other accused.
