In a significant crackdown on illicit drug activities, police and the Navy conducted a joint operation in Mongla town’s Madrasa Road area, leading to the arrest of a female drug trafficker. The raid resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of foreign liquor, yaba tablets, cash, and various drug consumption paraphernalia. The accused, identified as Safia Begum, is the wife of Abdur Rahim of Mongla Upazila.
OC (Investigation) of Mongla Police Station, Manik Chandra Gain, provided details of the operation, stating: “Based on credible intelligence, a raid was carried out on Tuesday night at a residence on Madrasa Road. Safia Begum was apprehended red-handed, and we recovered 18 bottles of foreign liquor, two yaba tablets, BDT 42,000 in cash, and various drug use implements. A case has been registered against her under the Narcotics Control Act at Mongla Police Station.”
Following her arrest, Safia Begum was sent to jail through Bagerhat Court. “We will continue to adopt a firm stance against illegal activities of this nature,” added the OC. “Ensuring that the public remains safe from drug traffickers and substance abusers is our foremost priority.”
Local sources revealed that Madrasa Road has long been a hub for an illegal drug distribution network. Residents believe that the recent raid will disrupt these activities and enhance community safety. “Such operations significantly improve security in our area and help reduce drug abuse,” said a local resident. “We hope the police continue to conduct regular inspections.”
The details of the seized items are as follows:
| Serial | Seized Items | Quantity / Value |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Foreign liquor | 18 bottles |
| 2 | Yaba tablets | 2 pieces |
| 3 | Cash | BDT 42,000 |
| 4 | Drug consumption equipment | Various types |
Both the police and Navy emphasised that such coordinated operations are conducted promptly to safeguard the general public, particularly students and young people, from the dangers of narcotics.
The local administration further stated: “We are making every effort to control narcotics in Mongla town. Through active police vigilance and public awareness, we hope to dismantle the drug networks operating in the area completely.”
Police and the Navy have urged the local community to continue their cooperation and support to ensure ongoing success in anti-drug operations. Future raids of this kind are expected to continue as part of a sustained effort to secure public safety and reduce substance abuse in the town.
