Woman Found Dead at DMCH Identified

Authorities have confirmed the identity of the young woman whose lifeless body was abandoned at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). The discovery was formally verified on Tuesday afternoon, 23 December, when her relatives visited the DMCH morgue to identify the body.

The deceased has been identified as Rasheda Akter, 22, daughter of the late Abu Bakkar Siddique, from Pukhuria village in Magura Sadar Upazila. At the time of her death, she was residing in the Ansar Camp area of Mirpur Section 1.

Rasheda had recently completed her higher secondary education at Alokdia Amresh Bose Degree College in Magura. On 7 December, she moved to Dhaka to stay with her elder sister and took up a job at a local garment factory, while also preparing for university admission.

The identification was confirmed by Sub-Inspector Monirul Islam of Mirpur Police Station, who stated: “Upon receiving the news, we visited DMCH on Tuesday night. In the presence of her relatives, a detailed post-mortem report of the body was prepared. The autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, which will clarify the cause of death.”

Investigations are ongoing. Preliminary inquiries reveal that CCTV footage from 20 December shows Rasheda walking with an unidentified young man, after which her movements were untraceable.

Her elder sister, Khaleda Akter, and brother-in-law, Md Mamun, have alleged that a neighbour from their village, Noyon Islam, had been harassing Rasheda. They suspect he deliberately murdered her and abandoned her body at the hospital. According to Khaleda, Rasheda had not gone to work on Saturday and remained at home until leaving the residence around 8 p.m. that evening. Neighbours report seeing Noyon Islam in Dhaka speaking to Rasheda outside her home on the same night, after which she disappeared.

The case has triggered a formal police investigation, with authorities inspecting the incident site and reviewing all available CCTV footage. Further details are expected to emerge following the autopsy.
