Woman Held with 7,940 Yaba Tablets in Kishoreganj

Law enforcement authorities have arrested a woman in Bhairab, Kishoreganj, after recovering a large consignment of illegal narcotics during a targeted anti-drug operation. The arrest took place on Monday, 15 December, when officials of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) seized 7,940 pieces of ya/ba tablets from the suspect.

The detainee has been identified as Mosammat Rozina Akhtar, aged 33, the wife of Md Yamin Mia of Pattan Uttarpara in Bijoynagar Upazila, Brahmanbaria District. According to officials, Rozina was apprehended in the late afternoon near Natal Mor, adjacent to the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway, a key transit route frequently exploited by drug traffickers.

Officials from the Department of Narcotics Control stated that the operation was conducted based on confidential intelligence reports. Acting on the tip-off, a DNC team positioned itself near the western side of the toll plaza at Syed Nazrul Islam Bridge, under Bhairab Police Station jurisdiction. During the operation, Rozina was intercepted while travelling from Brahmanbaria to Bhairab, allegedly posing as a passenger on a motorcycle.

Her behaviour reportedly aroused suspicion among the officers, prompting a search. Upon inspection, the officers recovered nearly eight thousand yaba tablets concealed in her possession. She was immediately taken into custody, and the seized narcotics were confiscated as evidence.

Speaking on the matter, Inspector Chandan Gopal Sur of the Bhairab office of the Department of Narcotics Control confirmed the arrest.

“Based on secret intelligence, we conducted a drug control operation on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway. During the operation, we arrested a woman carrying 7,940 pieces of yaba. Legal proceedings under the Narcotics Control Act are currently under process,” he said.

The arrest highlights the continued efforts by narcotics authorities to curb drug trafficking along major highway routes, which have increasingly become hotspots for the transportation of illicit substances. Officials noted that traffickers often employ various disguises, including using women as couriers, in an attempt to evade detection.

Authorities are now investigating whether the suspect is part of a larger drug trafficking network operating between districts. Further interrogations are expected to uncover additional information regarding supply chains, accomplices, and distribution routes.

Rozina Akhtar is expected to be produced before the court following the completion of initial legal formalities. The Department of Narcotics Control reiterated its commitment to intensifying surveillance and enforcement actions to prevent the spread of narcotics, particularly yaba, which continues to pose a serious social and public health threat.
