World Diabetes Day Observed Today

Today, 14 November, marks World Diabetes Day. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) declared this day as World Diabetes Day in 1991.

Since 2007, the day has been observed globally on a regular basis. At the initiative of the Bangladesh Diabetic Association, the Government of Bangladesh proposed the observance of World Diabetes Day to the United Nations. The proposal was unanimously adopted by the UN on 20 December 2006.

According to the World Health Organization and the International Diabetes Federation, one person with diabetes dies every ten seconds, and two new cases are diagnosed every ten seconds. The day is observed worldwide to raise awareness about diabetes and to emphasise the importance of a healthy lifestyle in combating the disease.
