In Satkhira, a 22-year-old college student has been arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl and distributing video footage of the assault on social media. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) apprehended the suspect, identified as Debashish Mal, on Wednesday night, 28 January, near the Rural Electrification Office in Patkelghata.
Debashish Mal, a resident of Kultia village in Satkhira Sadar Upazila, is the son of Bhola Nath Mal and reportedly pursuing undergraduate studies.
According to police records and the case files, the victim’s father is employed in Malaysia and was away from home at the time of the crime. Taking advantage of the absence, Debashish allegedly forced the girl into sexual acts. When she resisted, she sustained bite injuries. The accused reportedly recorded the assault and subsequently threatened to distribute the footage online, coercing the victim into repeated assaults. Several individuals, including Hriday Ghosh from the same village, allegedly assisted Debashish in committing these offences.
The victim disclosed the ordeal to her family, and the video reportedly circulated on social media in recent days, prompting her mother to file a case at Satkhira Sadar Police Station on 23 January under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and the Pornography Control Act.
Following the filing of the case, the victim underwent a medical examination, and her statement was recorded in court. Acting on the investigation, members of RAB-6 Satkhira camp arrested Debashish at a relative’s house at around 8:00 pm on Wednesday.
Sub-Inspector Sohrab Hossain of Brahmarajpur Police Outpost, who is also the investigating officer, stated that the suspect had been handed over to the police station. Preliminary questioning has been conducted, and Debashish is scheduled to be produced in court on Thursday. Efforts to apprehend the other accused individuals involved in the case are ongoing.
